01Introduction

ZeroLap is a GPS-based speedometer and vehicle performance meter for Android, developed by Zoran Gojkovic. We built ZeroLap with a privacy-first philosophy: your data belongs to you, stays on your device, and is never sold, rented, or shared for advertising purposes.

This Privacy Policy explains what information ZeroLap handles, why, and how you are protected. For the rules governing your use of the app, see our Terms of Service.

◆ Our commitment in one line

Every measurement you make with ZeroLap is computed and stored on your phone. We operate no analytics servers, no advertising SDKs, and no behavioral tracking.

02Information we collect

ZeroLap processes only the information strictly required for its features to function. We never collect information you have not explicitly enabled through app permissions.

2.1 Location data (GPS)

The app uses Android's FusedLocationProvider API to read your device's GPS coordinates, speed, and heading. This data is required for the core speedometer functionality and for calculating distance, trip statistics, and performance tests.

GPS data is processed entirely on your device in real time. It is never transmitted to us or any third party.

2.2 Motion sensor data

ZeroLap reads accelerometer and gyroscope values from your device via the Android SensorManager API. This data is used for:

  • GPS + IMU sensor fusion (improves acceleration measurement accuracy)
  • Real-time G-force display (longitudinal and lateral)
  • Slope compensation on inclined roads
  • Automatic start/stop detection for performance tests

Sensor readings are processed on-device and are not transmitted externally.

2.3 Camera and microphone (Pro video overlay)

If you use the Pro video overlay feature, ZeroLap will request access to your camera and microphone to record video with real-time performance data overlaid on the frame. The resulting video file is saved to your device's local storage (typically the Movies or DCIM folder).

◆ Camera and microphone

The camera and microphone are only activated while you are actively using the video overlay feature. ZeroLap never records audio or video in the background and never uploads your recordings to our servers.

2.4 Measurement history

The app stores your performance test results — acceleration times, maximum speeds, G-force peaks, trip logs, and associated metadata (date, duration, GPS track if enabled) — in a local database on your device using Room / SQLite. This data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.

2.5 In-app purchase data

If you purchase the Pro version of ZeroLap, the transaction is handled entirely by Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store your payment details, credit card information, or Google account identity. We only receive a confirmation token that tells the app whether your Pro entitlement is active.

2.6 Technical and diagnostic data

If the app crashes, a minimal anonymous crash report may be collected by the Android platform and shared with us through Google Play Console. This report contains only the app version, Android version, device model, and the technical stack trace. It contains no personal data, no location, and no measurement content.

03How we use information

All information described in Section 02 is used exclusively to:

  • Display your real-time speed, heading, and trip statistics
  • Measure and analyze vehicle performance (acceleration, G-force, braking, estimated power)
  • Record video with overlaid performance data when you use the Pro video overlay feature
  • Save your measurement history locally for future review and export
  • Verify your Pro entitlement through Google Play Billing
  • Diagnose and fix app crashes through anonymous crash reports

✓ What we do not do

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, lead generation, or resale. We operate no user-level analytics. Your driving habits, location history, and vehicle data are not aggregated, sold, or shared with insurance companies, data brokers, advertisers, or employers.

04Where your data is stored

4.1 Local-first principle

All core data generated by ZeroLap is stored exclusively on your device:

  • GPS coordinates and speed readings
  • Performance test results
  • Trip history and statistics
  • Video recordings (Pro)
  • App settings and preferences

This data is protected by Android's sandboxed application storage, meaning other apps on your device cannot read it without explicit user action (for example, exporting a file to shared storage).

4.2 No cloud by default

The current version of ZeroLap does not synchronize any measurement or personal data to external servers. If you uninstall the app, all locally stored data is removed by the operating system.

4.3 Future optional cloud features

A future optional subscription tier ("Cloud Plus") may introduce features such as cloud backup of measurements, community leaderboards, and ghost-mode comparisons against other users' runs. If and when these features are introduced, they will:

  • Be strictly opt-in and never enabled automatically
  • Be disclosed in an updated version of this Privacy Policy before activation
  • Allow full export and deletion of any cloud-stored data on request

05Data sharing and third parties

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal data with third parties for their own marketing or analytics purposes. ZeroLap contains no advertising SDKs, no social media trackers, and no behavioral analytics frameworks.

ZeroLap relies on a limited set of Google platform services that are inherent to running an Android application:

  • Google Play Billing — processes your optional Pro version purchase. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy and Terms.
  • Google Play Services — provides the location and activity-recognition APIs used by Android itself. Required by the operating system.
  • Google Play Console crash reporting — may receive anonymous technical crash reports if the app fails.

We may disclose data only if legally required to do so by a valid court order, subpoena, or other binding legal process. In such cases, we will provide only the minimum data technically available, and where permitted by law, we will notify you.

06Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you have certain rights regarding your personal data.

6.1 Rights available to all users

  • Right to delete — uninstalling ZeroLap removes all local data from your device
  • Right to export — use the in-app export feature to download your measurements in CSV, GPX, or KML format
  • Right to information — contact us at any time to ask what data (if any) we hold
  • Right to withdraw permissions — revoke location, camera, or microphone access at any time through your Android system settings

6.2 Additional rights for users in the European Union and the European Economic Area (GDPR)

  • Right of access to your personal data (Article 15)
  • Right to rectification of inaccurate data (Article 16)
  • Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten") (Article 17)
  • Right to restriction of processing (Article 18)
  • Right to data portability (Article 20)
  • Right to object to processing (Article 21)
  • Right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority

6.3 Additional rights for California residents (CCPA / CPRA)

  • Right to know what personal information is collected
  • Right to delete personal information
  • Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (not applicable — we do not sell or share data)
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at fenixjzdev@gmail.com. We respond within 30 days.

07Children's privacy

ZeroLap is not intended for or directed at children under 13 years of age (or the minimum digital-consent age in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has used ZeroLap and you wish data associated with their use to be removed, please contact us at fenixjzdev@gmail.com and we will assist.

08Data security

Because ZeroLap stores data locally on your device, its security is tied directly to the security of your device itself. We recommend that you:

  • Keep your device secured with a PIN, pattern, password, or biometric lock
  • Keep your Android operating system updated
  • Install ZeroLap only from the official Google Play Store
  • Review app permissions periodically in your system settings

We apply standard Android security practices (sandboxed storage, scoped permissions, no unnecessary broadcast receivers) to minimize risk. However, no method of electronic storage or data processing is 100% secure.

09Permissions requested

ZeroLap requests the following Android permissions. Each is requested only when the related feature is first used, with a clear in-app explanation.

  • ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION Required to read GPS coordinates, speed, and heading. This is the core permission without which the speedometer cannot function.
  • ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION Fallback when fine location is unavailable. Reduces battery impact when high precision is not needed.
  • ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION Enables automatic detection of motion state (stationary, walking, driving) for smart start / stop of performance tests.
  • CAMERA Optional. Required only when you use the Pro video overlay feature to record your drive with real-time data.
  • RECORD_AUDIO Optional. Used only to record audio alongside video when the Pro video overlay feature is active.
  • WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE / MANAGE_MEDIA Required to save video recordings and exported measurement files (CSV, GPX, KML, PDF) to your device's shared storage.
  • FOREGROUND_SERVICE Allows continuous speed and performance tracking during a drive, even when the screen is off or the app is in the background.
  • WAKE_LOCK Keeps the CPU and location services active during an ongoing performance test or drive session.
  • com.android.vending.BILLING Required by Google Play Billing to process optional Pro version purchases.
  • INTERNET Used only for Google Play Billing verification and future optional Cloud Plus features. No measurement data is transmitted.

You may revoke any of these permissions at any time through your Android system settings. Some app features will stop working when their required permission is revoked, but your existing data will not be affected.

10Data retention and deletion

Because ZeroLap stores all data locally, you fully control how long your data is retained. You can:

  • Delete individual measurement records through the in-app history screen
  • Clear the entire measurement history through the app's settings
  • Clear app data through your Android system settings (removes all app data but keeps the app installed)
  • Uninstall the app entirely (removes all app data permanently)

Anonymous crash reports collected by Google Play Console are retained by Google according to their own data-retention policy, typically 30 to 90 days.

11Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in features, legal requirements, or operational practices. When we make material changes — for example, introducing new features that collect additional data — we will:

  • Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this document
  • Display an in-app notice before the changes take effect
  • For significant changes affecting your rights, request your renewed consent where required by law

Your continued use of ZeroLap after an updated policy takes effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
